Praying With Power

The verse highlighted in this article is from Section II of our Investing Challenge.
“My Voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up”

Psalm 5:3

Over three hundred orphans and staff all sat at the table looking to where the director of the orphanage was standing. There were plates set out on the table in front of each person but there was no food on the plates the reason being that the orphanage was completely out of food. OrphansGeorge Mueller the director of the orphanage was not worried for he had prayed that God would provide food for them. Confident that God would supply their needs George Mueller led the group in a thanksgiving prayer for the food that the Lord was going to provide. At that moment there was a knock at the door. It was a local baker. God had prompted him to make a load of bread early that morning and bring it to the orphans. The orphans received this gift with joy. A couple of moments later another knock came at the door. This time it was a milk man. His truck had broken down in front of the orphanage and the milk in his truck would spoil before he could make the necessary repairs to his truck and he was wondering if the orphans could use the milk.
Scripture says that the effectual fervent payer of a righteous man avails much. (James 5:16) God provided for George Mueller in countless miraculous ways because George MullerGeorge Mueller chose to take everything to God in prayer and to trust God with all his heart. One of the most important ways we can invest in the kingdom is through prayer! God promises that He will move mountains, transform lives and do incredible impossible things through the prayers of His people.
The Lord has been teaching me so much about prayer and there is not a more thrilling topic I could write on! What I want to share with you are four things that the Lord has been showing me that are keys to a powerful prayer life.

  1. Rise up early! The Psalmist says “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning.” When we rise early to pray we are giving to the Lord the first fruits of our day. Jesus rose early in the morning to pray: Mark 1:35 reads, “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed in to a solitary place, and there prayed.” Let us follow our Master’s example and rise a great while before day to spend time with our Heavenly Father. This is the most important appointment of our day
  2. Abide In The Word! Powerful prayer comes from abiding in God’s Word! It is through meditating on the Word that our minds are renewed. Meditation on God’s Word aligns our heart with God’s heart and prepares us to pray with power. John 15:7 says, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” Powerful prayer flows from meditating on God’s Word! The first verse of Psalms 5 says “Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation” David had a powerful prayer life because he meditated on God’s Word day and night.
  3. Enter His Courts With Thanksgiving! It is so important that we begin our prayers with the giving of thanks! The Psalmist in Psalm 100:4 says “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto him and bless His name” The giving of thanks is key to a powerful prayer life! The giving of thanks builds our faith and as we begin praying with thanksgiving we immediately get the focus off of ourselves and on to the Lord. Philippians 4:6 says “Be careful for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
  4. Pray As An Ambassador! As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ we are ambassadors for His kingdom. As ambassadors we are to invest in His kingdom by sharing the gospel with the lost and praying for them. I have gotten into the habit of every morning praying that the Lord would arrange divine appointments for me to share the gospel with others. I have seen Him answer these prayers in incredible ways! I want to encourage you as an ambassador of Christ to pray every morning that the Lord will arrange divine appointments for you to share the gospel with others and invest in His kingdom. Be ready for Him to answer this prayer in amazing and impossible ways.

KneelingGod is calling us to invest in His kingdom through prayer! God desires that we turn aside from the things of this world and spend time on our knees in prayer. Let us invest our time in what will count for eternity! God is looking for more George Mullers who will trust Him with all their heart and take everything to Him in prayer. So I urge you: rise early, abide in the Word, enter the presence of the Lord with thanksgiving, pray as an ambassador of God’s kingdom and watch God do the impossible!
