Light!

“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son”

Colossians 1:13

Praise God for the amazing truth of what God in Christ has done for us! So much has been revealed of what the cross accomplished, and the victory we have! This verse shares some glorious truth with us.

There are two contrasts that I saw in this verse as I was thinking about it. The first one is the contrast of light and darkness. Colossians 1:12 talks about how we have been given the inheritance of the saints in light, and without taking a breath this verse talks about our deliverance from the power of darkness. 1 John 1:5 tells us “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” God is light! Light reveals what is. Light cannot be mixed with darkness. God has brought us into His light, the light of Jesus Christ, and there is no darkness in that! Light and darkness cannot co-exist in the same place.

When God brings us into His light, there is no room for darkness! Ephesians 5:8 tells us “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” We need to agree with God and walk in the reality of what He has done in our lives! “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” 2 Corinthians 4:6. I am so grateful for the light of Christ in my life that overcomes the darkness!

The other contrast that I saw in this verse is the power of darkness versus the kingdom of His dear Son. The Greek word that was translated “power” is the word ἐξουσίας, and it has the idea of authority. God, in Christ, delivered us from the authority of darkness. Darkness does not have the right to control my life anymore! Praise God! Jesus defeated all the powers of darkness at the cross! Colossians 2:15 talks about how Jesus spoiled the principalities and power at the cross and made an open display of them!

Not only were we delivered from the authority of darkness, but we were brought into the kingdom of His dear Son. Jesus brought the kingdom of God to us! We can live and walk in the reality of what God has done in Christ. When I submit myself to God and to His working, I am walking in the reality of the kingdom! God’s kingdom is a kingdom of righteousness, peace and joy.

Praise God for His working, for bringing us out of darkness, out of the authority of darkness, into His light and into His kingdom! May the Lord bring more and more the reality of this in our lives!
